In Sri Lanka, the practice of tipping is widespread and an integral part of the culture. Tipping is a gesture of thanks (which is not a salary) for the service rendered or the work done. You are free to tip and set the amount, based on your assessment of the service rendered.

Who to tip? In general, to anyone who has provided a service to the group: your Tour Leader, the mechanic and the driver, the waiters in the restaurants or street stalls, the luggage porters, etc.

It is difficult when traveling to know the “right” amount of tip, the one that corresponds to the standard of living of the local population.

Our suggestions, in keeping with the recommandations of the Agency for Responsible Tourism:

For your Tour Leader, from 3 to 5€ per day / person.
2 to 3€ per day / person for the mechanic and the driver.
From 50 to 100 Sri Lankan rupees depending on the number of luggage for porters in hotels.
About 10% of the bill in restaurants.
